Bebop Scale Practice

Concert Bb Bebop Scale

1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 maj7 8

Bb C D Eb F G Ab A Bb

For trumpet that’s C Bebop Scale

1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 maj7 8

C D E F G A Bb B C

Let’s practice jazz tonguing off the beat

Start with C D E D C D E D C. Two tongues to start and then it’s every second note (only tonguing D’s)

Next 5 notes, C D E F G F E D C D E F G F E D C… again two tongues to start and then alternate (D’s and F’s are tongued)

Then try going up and down the Bebop scale from the root note with alternate tonguing.

I’d suggest slowing this video down to 0.75 Speed at first

Pratice suggestions

Try the steps above to get your articulation happening with 3 notes, 5 notes, and then the whole Bebop Scale

Once you can go up and down one octave from the Root note try starting from each other chord tone…

from the 7th Bb B C D E F G A Bb back down

from the 5th G A Bb B C D E F G back down

from the 3rd E F G A Bb B C D E back down

chord tones must be On the beat so if you want to start off the beat try putting a semi-tone approach in front of the chord tone you’re starting on…

eg maj 7 approaches the Root, #2 approaches the 3, #4 approaches the 5, and 6 approaches the b7. i.e B to C, D# to E, F# to G, A to Bb

Then try continuous quavers (8th notes) switching directions whenever you like (try switching on chord tones at first).
